3i Group has appointed a former investment banker and mining industry veteran as chairman to replace Sir Adrian Montague, who is stepping down ahead of becoming chairman of Aviva.

Simon Thompson has become a non-executive director of the private equity firm, and will take over as chairman following its annual general meeting, which is expected to take place on June 25, according to a 3i statement on Monday.
