Reports that Barclays is privately and very tentatively exploring a possible merger with Standard Chartered should come as no great surprise. Barclays executives and their advisers have long toyed with the idea. And in January, Mark Kleinman predicted here that Barclays would be discussing a merger of its corporate and investment bank with Standard Chartered by the turn of the year.

The bigger surprise would be if it actually happened.
