Prior to being appointed chief executive of the UK regulator the Financial Services Authority, Hector Sants was managing director of the its wholesale and institutional division which oversees investment banks and hedge funds.

In this capacity Sants has worked to bring about greater surveillance of the private equity industry as concerns mount over high levels of debt used for large buyouts and the lack of transparency between private equity firms and the wider market.
