The Association of British Insurers has recruited Stephen Haddrill from the Department of Trade & Industry as director general to replace Mary Francis, who is stepping down after five years to concentrate on her non-executive directorships.

Haddrill, who is currently director general of the DTI's fair markets group, joins in May. He has spent much of his career at the DTI and has been director of employment relations and director of consumer affairs.
