The rules governing the drawing up of financial statements in the UK have been slated as a “bewildering mess” by the accountants’ trade body, which wants a series of ongoing government reviews to fix the problems.

Auditors and accountants in the UK have come under heavy fire from politicians in recent months, after a spate of high-profile corporate failures such as Carillion and BHS.
