It may not feel like a great time to work in finance, but spare a thought for everyone else.

According to the annual Sunday Times Rich List, the 131 people on it who have made their money from the financial services sector, such as banking dynasties, hedge fund managers, traders and private equity specialists, together with investors, saw their total fortunes fall by nearly 27% in 2008 to £24bn.
