Alcatel faces rating downgrade into high-yield territory

Alcatel, the French telecoms equipment provider, is facing a growing threat of becoming the first major Continental European company in the sector to lose its investment-grade credit ratings.

Standard & Poor's, the international ratings agency, placed its A3 short-term rating on CreditWatch with negative implications on Wednesday, after Alcatel lowered its earnings outlook for the year, casting further gloom on the already depressed European telecoms equipment sector.
