Alliance & Leicester said today that chairman Derek Higgs had died suddenly Monday afternoon and that chief executive David Bennett will return to work next week after recovering from illness.

Higgs, who was 64 and appointed chairman in October 2005, was taken ill Monday and passed away in a London hospital, A&L said. Deputy chairman Roy Brown will act as chairman in the short-term while a permanent replacement is found.
