Nearly eight years after she became chief executive of Alliance Trust, the UK-listed investment company, Katherine Garrett-Cox’s position has become a cost item.

She has agreed to step down as CEO of its £5 billion Alliance Trust Investments funds arm in March, having already resigned from the board of the listed trust in October 2015.
