AlpInvest, the world's largest investor in private equity with €20bn ($24bn) committed, has hired Peter Cornelius as its first in-house economist. AlpInvest is understood to be the first private equity investor to create such a post.

Cornelius joins from Royal Dutch Shell where he was group chief economist based in London. He has also been group chief economist of the World Economic Forum.
