Ameritrade Holdings and TD Waterhouse, the online US brokerages, last night confirmed they are holding talks about a possible merger in a deal that could be worth up to $3bn (€2.4bn).

Neither party disclosed terms and both said they would make no further comment until an agreement is reached.
