Academics are used to disagreements, though they rarely generate more than a few frosty glares across a conference floor or the occasional sarcastic aside during a keynote speech. The 2013 battle over Harvard professors Kenneth Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart’s research into sovereign debt was different.

“It was represented as a scholarly challenge, which it wasn’t — at all,” says Rogoff. “It was actually polemic, and political.”
