Former Vote Leave chief executive Matthew Elliott says he was not “instinctively” a backer from day one of the push for the UK to exit the European Union.

It is a surprising admission given his prominent role in the official Brexit campaign, but the 39-year-old political maven was never going to fit the stereotype of a Brexiteer.
