If Bill McNabb’s new beard is anything to go by, the departing chief executive of Vanguard is easing nicely into his last two months at the top of the asset management behemoth.

The 60-year-old former teacher, responsible for charting an eye-watering $3tn rise in assets at the investment house, grew the beard during a recent trip to Africa with his wife Katie.
