Apple’s selloff could push Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway into the red

Berkshire Hathaway's operating businesses are expected to do well, but a decline in its equity holdings is expected to hit earnings

Berkshire Hathaway ’s fourth-quarter earnings could be a casualty of the stock-market selloff.

The big conglomerate headed by Warren Buffett might report a loss for the current quarter because of a drop in the value of Apple and other stocks in its equity portfolio. Apple’s stock, Berkshire’s largest equity holding, is down about 25% since September 30, to a recent $167. Berkshire equity portfolio totaled $201bn at the end of the third quarter.
