European asset managers have been bolstering their environmental, social and governance capabilities at breakneck speed. But new research has raised questions about whether they can afford the significant investment needed to support these efforts.

“There are huge execution risks, which most ESG professionals at asset managers are just not aware of,” says Neil Scarth, a principal at Frost Consulting, who has analysed asset managers’ research funding models.
