Atkin's departure fuels speculation over Instinet's future

The resignation of Douglas Atkin, chief executive of Instinet, has fuelled speculation that the firm will merge with a competitor or be bought back by Reuters.

Atkin's resignation on Tuesday comes just months after Instinet, which was once the largest so-called electronic communications network (ECN) in the US, was overtaken by archrival Island. Instinet's European fixed income business is also struggling, according to industry sources.
