BA covers fines with £400m pensions saving

British Airways saved £396m (€582m) last year with a change to its workers' future pensions payments, but was forced to set aside most of the gains to cover penalties the UK airline expects to shell out after admitting it broke competition law.

The airline revealed it had put aside a £350m provision to meet anticipated fines and legal bills, after admitting for the first time that it may have broken the law by discussing fuel surcharges with rivals.
