Nobody comes out of the pension fund and gilt market crisis looking good. In the middle of the firing line is Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey whom one market commentator accused of delivering the “shortest suicide note in history”.

Certainly, Bailey seems to have been playing high-risk games of chicken with both the government and the pension funds. But there are signs that his gambles may pay off, limiting the reputational hit for earlier mistakes.
