BofA Merrill weighed down by litigation expenses

US bank said it took a $1.6bn writedown over the third quarter of this year due to litigation expenses

Litigation costs battered profits at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the third quarter of this year, although the firm’s advisory business enjoyed its best three months for more than a year.

The US bank's global markets division were mixed, however, with the debt trading business booming as equities trading fell.
