The Bank of England governor has poured cold water over cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and their ability to revolutionise the future of money — saying the greater treasure is to be found in the underlying technology.

In a speech for the inaugural Scottish Economics Conference at Edinburgh University today, Mark Carney said that while cryptocurrencies did not pose immediate risks to financial stability, they were "failing" to fulfill the role of money.
