The threat that cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin pose to global financial stability is “getting closer”, a top Bank of England official said, urging regulators to take action on the growing sector.

Sir Jon Cunliffe, deputy governor for financial stability at the Bank, said cryptoassets could soon reach the point at which their trademark volatility could spill over into traditional markets.
