Peter Alexander Burt, executive deputy chairman of HBOS, the UK financial services firm, is the sole banker to be knighted in the Queen's 2003 New Year's honours list.

Banking executives gave a poor showing as the list focused instead on the achievements of regulators, government bodies and academics.
