Banking lobby groups fear EU’s big tech tax

EU proposals for a new levy on the likes of Google and Facebook could snare financial services

Influential financial lobby groups are calling on the European Union to ensure that a proposed digital services tax aimed at the world’s technology giants does not hit banks and trading firms.

Under the proposals, first unveiled in March, the 3% sales tax would apply to companies with worldwide revenues of at least €750m and EU digital revenues of €50m. It forms part of a growing political drive to tax big tech companies that operate across borders.
