Cyber experts have said the billions spent by banks on data security has left them better placed to defend against the kind of ransomware attack that swept the globe late last week. But they have warned against complacency.

The spread of the so-called WannaCry software - which encrypts files and demands payment in bitcoin to release them - began on May 12, hitting old Microsoft systems at organisations in the UK, Germany, Russia and the US, among others.
