French banks face knock to ROE

BarCap analyst says deleveraging at French banks may help in the short term – but will have a negative long-term impact on their return on equity

Shareholders in French banks, which are looking to raise capital and restructure to boost confidence in the current turmoil, face owning far less attractive investments, according to analysts at Barclays Capital.

Moves to make French banks smaller and safer, announced by the top two French banks last week, are likely to reduce their return on equity in the medium to long term, a note from the research unit said today.
