Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of the UK bank, has made its first principal investment in the US with the acquisition of a stake in a company that invests in the energy sector.

The bank's principal investing and private equity business has bought 40% of NGP Energy Capital Management, a Texas-based private equity firm investing in the energy industry.
