Barclays has handed Gary Hoffman his second promotion in six months, appointing him to a new role as group vice-chairman in one of several changes to the UK banking group's board.

Hoffman, who has worked for Barclays since 1982, was made chairman of the UK banking business and Barclaycard, the credit card division, in December. He will become group vice chairman on July 10 and report to John Varley, group chief executive.
