Barclays chief executive Jes Staley is stepping down amid a regulatory probe into how he characterised his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

It ends a six-year tenure at the top of the UK lender, during which Staley has stuck rigidly to his strategy of bolstering Barclays' investment bank in the face of investor and activist pressure.
