Barclays' investment bankers brought in more money than its traders in the opening months of the year, thanks to the best quarter in three years for debt capital markets work.

Pre-tax profits at Barclays' corporate and investment bank rose 13% year-on-year to £790 million during the period, with fees from capital markets and advisory work up 51%, according to results published today.
