Barclays faces new SFO charge over Qatari fundraising

The UK's Serious Fraud Office has issued fresh charges against Barclays over its controversial crisis-era capital injection from Qatari investors.

The SFO said in a statement today that the charges relate to "unlawful financial assistance" that subsidiary Barclays Bank gave to Qatar Holding in October and November 2008 — this assistance came in the form of a $3bn loan for the "purpose of directly or indirectly acquiring shares in Barclays".
