Profits at Barclays’ investment bank rose by a quarter in 2018, a result that will ease the pressure on management as activist investor Edward Bramson pushes for an overhaul of the division.

The UK bank had group pre-tax profits of £3.49bn last year, slipping by 1.3% as litigation and conduct issues weighed on earnings. Revenues were flat at £21.1bn.
