Barclays could hardly have delivered a more emphatic rebuttal to activist investor Edward Bramson.

The group’s investment bank, which Bramson has argued should be dramatically scaled back because of its low returns, put in a stellar performance in the first quarter. Far from dragging down the other businesses, which Bramson likes, the investment bank helped offset the impact of the crisis on Barclays’ retail banking and credit card arms.
