Berenberg has paid its top British banker €20m (£16.6m) after a stellar year for the German lender, which hauled in record profit amid a deal boom.

David Mortlock, who became Berenberg’s first-ever non-German managing partner in September 2020, was given the award as the bank unveiled the best 12-month period in its 432-year history.
