Berlin trumps London as European tech hub

The German capital proved popular for early-stage investment in the second quarter but opinion is divided on whether it will retain its leading position

While London may historically be the hub of Europe’s venture capital industry, recent deal activity has seen Berlin emerge as the place to be for start-up investment.

UK venture investment, as a proportion of all European venture investment, has dropped to its lowest level since 2000. Figures from Dow Jones VentureSource show UK companies, which traditionally received about a third of Europe's venture investment, attracted just 16% of all investment in the second quarter. Deal values fell 44% on the previous quarter to €211 million. The figures include entry and follow-on investments.
