USS, the UK’s biggest pension fund, has told the universities who make up its membership that they must act now to support the scheme — or watch as its deficit bill soars as high as £17.9bn, almost six times its level in 2018.

Officials at the Universities Superannuation Scheme laid out the stark figures in a briefing on 7 September, as they kicked off an eight-week consultation with universities on its financial future.
