Hedge funds betting on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies lost almost 10% in a volatile January — but the severe falls were not enough to dent the positive story of the last 12 months.

Data provider HFR’s bitcoin index showed hedge funds investing in digital currencies lost an average of 9.22% in the opening month of the year. This was a huge change from the 88.37% they gained in December.
