BNP Paribas has denied reports that it has approached UK investment bank Close Brothers with a view to a takeover.

A BNP Paribas spokeswoman confirmed that absolutely no contact had been made between the two firms regarding a takeover of the independent Close Brothers, which owns the lucrative marketmaker Winterflood Securities. Close refused to comment about the Financial Times report.
