BNP Paribas says 'largely profitable' in 2008

French bank BNP Paribas said Thursday it had been "largely profitable" during 2008 despite exceptionally difficult market conditions that led it to issue a profit warning in December.

In an open letter published in the French financial press, chairman Michel Pebereau and chief executive Baudouin Prot said the bank is "one of the global players that has best resisted the crisis over the long term."
