BoE is considering an official digital currency, says governor

Andrew Bailey said a ‘central bank digital currency’ could be on the agenda in the next few years

The Bank of England is considering if it should create a digital currency, the bank’s governor Andrew Bailey has said.

Andrew Bailey, speaking at a Speakers for Schools webinar for students on 13 July, said the BoE was “looking at the question of, should we create a Bank of England digital currency”.
