Boots shocks with new pension charge

Boots, the UK chemists chain which set the tone for pension fund investments when it switched its portfolio from shares to bonds, is to take a charge of about £70m (€104m) against the value of its scheme, £40m higher than expected.

The £70m charge for this financial year, compares with a £30m charge taken by Boots in 2003
