British Prime Minister Boris Johnson Thursday replaced UK treasury chief Sajid Javid, a surprise move aimed at consolidating power in Downing Street as the country prepares for life outside the European Union.
The exit of Javid came alongside a broader reshuffle where several more junior ministers were replaced. Javid, the first Muslim to hold the role of treasury chief, was due to present the country’s budget next month and was the shortest-serving minister in the role since 1970. He will be replaced by Rishi Sunak, a treasury minister who previously worked for Goldman Sachs before founding his own investment fund.
