The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to announce a new three-tiered system of lockdown measures that will be implemented uniformly across England, replacing the country’s patchwork quilt of local lockdowns.

The new system will see parts of England subject to different stages of virus restrictions based on their assignment of medium, high and very high “local Covid alert levels”, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office.
