The spread of Covid-19 in England has reached 45,000 new confirmed cases every day, the largest scientific study conducted to date has revealed, as scientists push the government for "emergency action".

In findings published on 9 October by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI, a study of 175,000 volunteers found one in every 170 people had the virus between 18 September and 5 October.
