We have been living with the uncertainty of Brexit for so long it is easy to become a bit inured to it. Yet if you stand back for a moment and ponder the position the City finds itself in, it is quite extraordinary. Four and half years after the referendum and financial firms still don’t know how they will be able to trade with the EU - next month.
At least for UK manufacturing companies the outcome of the trade talks will provide some clarity. They will know whether or not they will face tariffs for exporting into the EU on January 1. But for financial services companies the uncertainty will continue.
