Brexit transition will not be agreed by Christmas, warns former Brussels envoy

A transitional arrangement to ease the UK and European Union into Brexit will not be agreed before 2018 as negotiating power lies in Europe’s hands, the UK’s former ambassador in Brussels has warned.

Sir Ivan Rogers, the former permanent representative for the UK in the EU, yesterday told members of parliament’s Treasury Committee that businesses expecting legal clarity on a Brexit transition by December were "going to be disappointed".
