BrokerTec, the electronic trading arm of money broker Icap, has been given permission to directly clear and settle Italian cash and repo trades for the first time. The licence will allow it to go head to head with arch rival MTS on its home territory.

Until now MTS has been the sole fixed income electronic trading platform able to directly access the Italian clearing body, Monte Titoli.
