Career Clinic: Damned by association

Can working at a firm currently embroiled in a scandal impact your chances of finding employment elsewhere?

I work at a large bank and my division is currently in the press for all the wrong reasons - people have been fired for misconduct. I have done nothing wrong and want to move on but am worried all the bad press will impact my chance of finding new employment. What should I do?

It's natural to worry that you may be 'tarred with the same brush' as misbehaving colleagues, and that you could be impacted by the reputational hit your firm will take. Some potential employers will have preconceived ideas about your firm, division and the people who work there.
