Chase, JP Morgan chairmen play down job cuts

The combination of Chase Manhattan and JP Morgan will not involve massive lay-offs in Europe and could even result in a renewed recruitment drive, Bill Harrison and Douglas Warner said on Wednesday.

The two chairmen, speaking before back to back 'Town Hall' addresses to staff at their respective banks' London offices, said that the rationale for their combination had very little to do with cost-cutting opportunities.
