Chase results 'show need for merger'

Chase Manhattan's disappointing third-quarter results reinforce the need for the bank to merge with JP Morgan, according to a London banking analyst.

The results showed a 24% drop in third-quarter earnings for Chase, with most of the impact coming from losses from its venture capital operations, Chase Capital Partners. In addition the bank experienced a fall in profits from its investment banking operations, and operating earnings fell 15%.
